Viatical settlements -- contracts where an
investor acquires an interest in the life insurance policy of
a terminally ill person. Hailed both as blessings to the terminally
ill and the epitomy of greed in America, one thing about viatical
settlements is sure (for now) -- they aren't insurance. In
SEC
v. Life Partners Inc the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District
of Columbia Circuit held that the SEC cannot regulate viatical
settlements.
The Human Genome Project has already produced
a "rough" list of over 16,000 genes in the human body (about a fifth
of the entire set). The rest should be done by the year 2005. Among
the list of
Featured
Genes is
BRCA1
and
BRCA2,
a couple of genes that are thought to predict breast and ovarian
cancer. Similar genes have been mapped for other diseases. Physicians
can now order a $2400 test to detect all mutations of the genes, and
this has caused an ethics stir. For more information on the Human
Genome Project, check out
The
Human Transcript Map. For more information on genetic screening
for breast cancer, visit
